  • Since you mentioned Spain and how you think people in that country are not suffering the same “cultural wars” as the United States over the issues of sex and gender, I just found a Tweet posted by Spanish author Arturo Pérez Reverte, in which he shared a letter received by a businessman who sells door signs for children’s bedrooms. The letter was sent by someone in the Spanish Ministry of Equality and Against Gender Violence, who took an issue to the fact the door signs had messages like “here sleeps a little hero,” here sleeps a little pirate,” “this is the room of a little princess” or “here sleeps the little queen of the house.” These door signs, according to the letter, were preserving and upholding outdated sexist stereotypes which needed to be eradicated from modern society:

It’s an interesting discussion. And it made me think of how we often see princesses as defenseless, frail beings who need to be saved from a tower guarded by a dragon by a bold knight in shining armor, right? But what about characters like Princess Leia, who did need to be rescued at first but was the leaders of the freaking galactic rebellion? What about Lady Di, a woman who had the courage to walk across MINED FIELDS in Africa in order to call the attention of the world to terrible humanitarian crises?
